World Evangelical Alliance Welcomes New UN Human Rights
Council
The World Evangelical Alliance
(WEA) welcomed the UN General Assembly decision to
create a new Human Rights Council, calling it a major
step in the right direction. "Something had to be
done and now it has," said Johan Candelin, WEA Goodwill
Ambassador and UN representative. |

Algeria:
Severe New Penalties for ‘Proselytizing’
A presidential order that establishes
new conditions for the exercise of non-Muslim religious
practice was passed in the Algerian Ummah council (Senate)
on Monday 13 March, and in the Algerian National Assembly
(Parliament) on 15 March. As a presidential order, the
text would not have even been open to debate. |

Afghanistan: Kabul Apostasy Trial
On Monday 26 January 2004 Afghanistan's
President Hamid Karzai signed the new Afghanistan Constitution
into law. While many rejoiced and hailed the document
as a great leap forward, most religious liberty monitors
and advocates despaired. |

Indonesia: Religious Liberty Crumbling
A joint ministerial decree issued
in Indonesia in 1969 established guidelines for religious
groups wanting to build places of worship. Religious groups
had to apply for a permit, but a local council could only
grant a permit if locals living in the immediate vicinity
of the proposed church, mosque or temple gave their consent.
In practice, this made it difficult for non-Muslims to
receive a permit to construct a place of worship, particularly
in strongly Muslim districts. |

EFC
Advocated for Christian Convert in Afghanistan
The Evangelical Fellowship of
Canada actively advocated, along with others, for the
dismissal of charges against Abdul Rahman who faced the
possibility of the death penalty in Afghanistan for converting
from Islam to Christianity. Please join us in prayers
of thanksgiving that the charges against Rahman were dismissed.
The EFC raised Rahman's case in meetings with the Canadian
government, sent letters to the Prime
Minister and Canada’s
Minister of Foreign Affairs, submitted letters to
the Globe
and Mail and the
National
Post, and issued three prayer alerts through
the EFC’s Religious Liberty Commission. Janet Epp
Buckingham, director of law and public policy for the
EFC, had media interviews in Saskatchewan and Ottawa.
Updates
still are available on the case. |

Southern for a consultation on cooperation and working
together. |

Evangelical
Fellowship of India: General Secretary Rev. Richard Howell
March Editorial
I believe Jesus Christ is not
only my personal Saviour but also the Saviour and Lord
of the whole universe. He was crucified on the cruel cross
of Calvary but rose again from the dead on the third day.
The cross portrays shame and abandonment as also the self-giving
love of God for sinful humanity. |

European
Evangelical Alliance: Pray for Belarussian Brothers and
Sisters
Most of you have probably been
following and praying for events in Belarus in the last
few weeks. The situation is deteriorating and we have
been asked to pray and act to help. EEA does not often
ask everyone to act but we feel that the Belarussian situation
merits our strong support - it is the worst religious
liberty situation in "our" part of the world. |

European
Evangelical Alliance: Sexual Ethics - Responding to a
Changing World
In Europe , public sexual attitudes
have been changing dramatically for at least the last
40 years. Marriage and family are being undermined and
people, especially children, are being hurt. Bible-believing
Christians are called to proclaim God’s good gift
of family and monogamous heterosexual marriage as the
basic and crucial relational unit in society. |

European
Evangelical Alliance: Homosexual Partnerships
IHow Christians respond to homosexuality
within the Church is one question. But our calling is
to a wider responsibility within society as well: and
“gay rights” are on the political agenda in
many European countries and at EU level. The EEA believes
we need to reflect on how we should respond politically.
Our political arguments will not be exactly the same as
those used within the Christian community because the
law applies to all people, Christian or not. |

A Study
Guide - Working Your Way to the Nations: A Guide
to Effective Tentmaking
(InterVarsity Press, 1997
- LIBRARY MISSIONS)
Tentmaking is a subject of strategic importance
to world evangelization. The concept is biblical,
historical precedents abound, and today’s
missionary context demands it. This book will fill
a gap in the area since it provides a set of essays
on effective tentmaking by experienced and knowledgeable
missions specialists from around the world. Its
concerns are practical but what makes this book
doubly useful is the fact that it is designed as
a study text either for individual or group use.
Anyone contemplating the tentmaking role would be
well advised to check out this book. Edited by Jonathan
Lewis, Wm Carey Library, 1993, 193pp (Source: Mission
Books) |
